Ruma Barua is a retired school teacher who taught for 37
years at the St Mary’s Convent of Guwahati. Geography,
English and Social Studies were her subjects and she had
taught students of Class 9 and 10. With a B.Ed degree in
her basket of educational qualifications, Ruma Barua is
known for her effective and engaging teaching style.
Before St Mary’s she had taught for some years at the
Carmel School of Jorhat.
Ruma grew up in the tea gardens of Upper Assam as her
father was a manager of Khatangpani Tea Estate for
nearly 25 years. She studied at Little Flower School in
Dibrugarh and later at St Mary’s College in Shillong. An
alumnus of the prestigious Cotton College (in Guwahati)
and Gauhati University, Ruma is an avid reader and
enjoys good movies and music. She has a son and
daughter and is a doting grandmother to her grandson,
Rivaan.
